Maybe you personally don't plan to keep your TV another 3 years (when I estimate your TV will start to show letterbox wear in content), but some people want 10-15 years out of their TVs.

With your usage, if letterbox makes up just 1/8th of your content (which is reasonable, maybe on the high side even for a non blu-ray movie buff), it won't be too much longer before test screens begin to show letterbox-style wear on your panel. You don't have to try to make things look like anyone concerned must be obsessing. They can also find their total hours by taking daily average and multiplying by days since purchased if they can't check a menu. But as the cause of an issue, people do make a mental note of how much letterbox content they consume in general and can give it as an estimate in percent of total media consumed. I doubt anyone does meticulously, like in a book or something.

I don't have the software to find the average light levels or a program to make the video, but I'm sure someone here does! Maybe a higher brightness version to speed things along (This should also be able to be done to TVs with the problem already by running it overnight. If it's being done too fast, and letterbox area dimming is seen first, you'd just stop running the countermeasure video until movie watching catches up. But! Even if we're off by 50%, the time before obvious problems are seen would be doubled. It won't be exact because all movies are different. We upload it to youtube with playlists containing 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 of them to coincide with how many movies someone's watched. This could be done in 10 minutes maybe, it depends (we want to keep the brightness in the countermeasure video to under 300 nits to keep well within the linear region of OLED degradation). Only where the black bars were gets illuminated 200 white for 5 min for a total of 20 minutes. Multiply each by 20 (100/5=20)įor this estimate/trial run, for 5 minutes we display 200 lumens of blue, 200 of green for 5 min, 200 red for 5 min. We find the average red, green, and blue luminance of a few movies - it's probably somewhere around 10 nits.

We can figure out the exact math in a bit, but basically we need to run a video for 20 minutes per 100 minutes of movie (avg length). A video you run after each movie (or 3 times in a row after 3 movies etc) I have an idea to fix uneven wear from letterbox movies.
